now... and always by aquanut now... and always by aquanut
:bulletblue: tumblr :bulletblue:

- Don't... I, too, thought it was the way we had to be with each other. But I was wrong-- I can't take it anymore. I've been so lonely all this time. Leaving the plains... And you, my best friend treating me like a noble stranger. What does rank and birth have to do with anything? I'm still myself, and you're still you! Please, talk to me normally, like you always used to.

- Lyndis...Lyn... I...I'm sorry. I had no idea you felt that way...

- I do, and someday when I return to the plains... Come with me, won't you? I may not be able to pay you like I do now... But I would like you with me, Florina, as a friend.

Oh my god... I think the Support Conversations are what gives Fire Emblem the most depth, and they show us that they're not just faceless soldiers. But people... Who... have stories that make me just... *Flips a table*

Thank you! I really appreciate all your faves and thoughtful comments; it means a lot to me that you're taking the time to leave these messages--it's nice to receive such positive feedback from someone that I know cares deeply about the game and has devoted so much thought to it. Lyn and Florina's relationship is my favorite in the whole game and I'm really glad I was able to pay it tribute here.

Aww, I'm glad to hear that! I'm happy to engage where I can, especially with such great work. Usually I'm just in my little far-off corner of fandom so it's nice to talk with people outside of that. :)

Aw, well, I appreciate your taking the time to do so! I have this concept of your far-off corner of fandom being this intriguing but mystifying distant Mecca of Fandom Theorists so it's always nice when someone comes down among us commoners to offer words of wisdom. =)

Aww, I'm sorry if we seem that aloof! Really, it's mostly a bunch of glorified flailing around about stuff we like and/or have ideas about. Like I recently wrote a 3K word thing that basically boiled down to saying that Roy is a nerd. But I totally get that it seems like you have to formulate big long essays to get your point across, and that can be intimidating. Fwiw, I think you'd fare pretty well doing meta!

Haha, I'm sure; that's pretty much what all fandom debate boils down to. (Also, Roy probably is a nerd. :P Though I am afraid that, having read certain SSB fancomics prior to actually playing FE6, when I found out how relatively weak he was for a lord character I was always imagining him racing all over the battlefield accidentally running into trees and jumping off cliffs...) Also, thank you, haha. I'm actually well aware of my ability to do fandom essays, it's just that I avoid it because it would feel like being in English class again. I guess I feel like people are more critical of written contributions to fandom and also that slinging opinions back and forth gets tiring once you've hashed out where everyone stands and no one's mind is going to be changed, so I would rather spend my fandom time drawing pictures that make a lot of people smile or laugh as opposed to the few people who care enough to read an essay. But I do appreciate it when I get an opportunity to talk about characters in more depth than I get into with most artists, so this is pleasant.

Yeah, I definitely understand that sentiment. For my part I try and make contributions that are less argumentative than helpful to other writers.

Yeah, Roy's got the combined factors of being really really smart and curious with being super perfectionist and analytical and also socially awkward. Which would actually also make for a fun caricature, I think! I feel like SSB fandom hasn't changed its tune because they're afraid FE characterizations will suck the fun out of everything, but you can do fun things with it too! (Then again, FE fandom has a hard enough time getting its own characters right!)

I appreciate that. I enjoy it more when fans get together to share their love for a series and express their thoughts on it in a cooperative and encouraging way, rather than trying to pick holes in each other and prove which headcanon is the best.

It would, haha! I think maybe it's just because SSB fandom is completely unfamiliar with the characters and unless they actually play the FE games, they just have nothing else to go on other than what they make up about the characters out of their heads, which is somewhat forgivable considering that SSB allows you to get characters to engage in all sorts of wacky OOC scenarios and that crossover aspect is part of what makes it fun. I remember the days when Marth was the go-to rival love interest for Zelda among Legend of Zelda shippers... how frustrating that was. (And that's sadly true, heh!)

Okay now, when I saw this conversation, I found it heartwarming, but not entirely special. I guess it was the aesthetics that didn't make it feel larger than life, despite me really appreciating this pair.

I have to tell you though, you did make it that. You turned this convo into a really sweet, and beautifully portrayed scene. The color scheme set with this pretty scenery and detail while these two embracing each other is something I couldn't ever thought about if seeing this reimagined in some way. So much feels, I think I might love these two together even more thanks to you.

Hopefully one day I could be able to do something like this, your art can just be oh so inspiring

Ahh wow, this is actually my favorite relationship in the whole game and I'm really happy to know that I was able to convey the sense of their bond in a way that made it more meaningful to you. I love their devotion to each other and I'm very glad that I was able to bring the supports to life, so to speak. Thank you very much for your detailed and thoughtful comment; it means a lot that I was able to enhance your view on these two!

Aw thanks, I'm happy that you get inspiration from my work! You can definitely do something like this one day if you keep working at it. The way you draw faces is really cute, and I like seeing your character interactions like between Ruby and Guy hahaa. It'd be great to see you draw more scenes like the date with Marth or the SSB pic of Lip vs. Yoshi (which I know was a collab, but I really like the angle and expressions/interactions). Honestly, no artist is ever 100% satisfied with their work; you just learn to shut up your inner editor and keep making things and figuring out what you can do better next time.

You look at your old pictures and ask yourself what you like about them and what you don't like, and you look at other people's pictures and ask yourself what you like about them and what you don't like, and then you make another picture and try to only incorporate the stuff you like. Why does this face look right and this face look off? You look at reference and analyze it, really pay attention to the distances between the different elements of the scene (proportions--because a huge amount of making things look decent just comes down to being able to passably eyeball measurements) and look for the most basic structural elements (because everything can be reduced down to geometric shapes that are much easier to work with). Use reference for everything, both photo reference and other artists' work. Here's a great tutorial on using photo ref: fyuvix.deviantart.com/art/Tuto…

Just keep drawing, observing, and analyzing. You're never going to be completely happy with your work, but someday you'll find that you are able to convey your ideas with some degree of effectiveness. The more you keep trying, the faster that day will come.

Oh my God Oh my God oh my God I can't stop fangirling I'm sorry but really I'm just really really surprised you even took time to even look anything in my gallery- I don't mean to view you as some big idol but seriously you really inspire me so much and it honors me to hear, seriously my gallery's not much worth of looking through I think

But sincerely, thanks for all the constructive and helpful words of advice, I agree with many of them (though I think I forgot to do these as time went on...)

I'm dreaming (and aspiring) of being able to draw these kind of pictures like you do, with mostly implementing with the whole crossover obsession I hold so much: just the thought of different characters from many universes interacting together in expressive and vividly colored scenes like from a storybook or graphic novel would be something so amazing to create and make me so happy. Seeing your artwork will always remind me of that dream, it just really beautiful to look at in your form alone.
My biggest fear just is that I'll take years to achieve (considering the needed techniques and aspects of drawing I need to learn) and I'm already 19- and I'm bit on-off guy when it comes to drawing /+ my general high school life/.
Currently the best I can do now is to write fanfics/literature to get any share of this dream (which I've done for maybe 11 years now).

Still, thanks once again Aquanut, I'm really happily surprised you took time to tell me all of this (and even checking through my gallery, I'm genuinely glad to hear all what you thought, it made me look my art in more better light than usually before.)

Ahaha, well you always leave me these really kind and thoughtful comments and tags so it’s the least I can do! I appreciate all your long comments, thank you. And I’m happy to be able to inspire someone. I really enjoy looking at everyone’s art and yours is no exception, it’s great to see all the stuff fans come up with to express their love for the series that mean so much to us. Also you make a good case for Lip being in SSB, though personally I’ve always wanted to see Lyn. Still hoping SSB4 has Lucina, at least as an alternate skin for Marth.

Yeah, that’s the trouble; even when you know what to do, you still have to make yourself do it. I struggle with that as much as anyone and it never really stops being a challenge to push yourself further because there’s always something new to strive for. I was really lazy and unproductive for a while last year and finally it just hit a point where I was like, “I’m not going to finish the stuff I want to do unless I actually force myself do it,” so I stopped putting things off as much, but self-discipline is a skill I’m still learning.

Crossovers are awesome and the main thing I love about the SSB series is that it’s so much fun to see all the characters from different worlds coming together and interacting; I loved the Subspace Emissary cutscenes for that reason. I would love to see a crossover done in a storybook format as well; it’d be awesome if you did it one day!
Honestly, 19 is still very young. It does take years to become able to draw at a certain level of skill, but it’s better to focus on what you’re able to do right now and not on a future that seems impossibly far away, and just keep doing what you can with what you have to work with. A person can improve very fast if they draw regularly (even if they just set aside half an hour a day) and keep analyzing their work.
But yeah, I understand how school takes a lot out of you. I have a lot of free time right now so I can draw a lot of fanart (though whether or not that’s a good use of the free time is up for debate… as fun as fandoms are, you usually don’t get a job with just fanart, so I should really be making more original work…) but when I had to focus on studying for exams and whatnot I really wasn’t drawing much either. Keep going with the fanfics though! Have you ever tried to illustrate one? When I was younger I was really inspired by newspaper comic strips and was always drawing my own comic books haha.

No problem there, I'm glad you appreciate them- I think it's just that your art just is filled with so much to say about, you put so much care, detail and work on them. (-´2`-)

Also you make a good case for Lip being in SSB, though personally I’ve always wanted to see Lyn. Still hoping SSB4 has Lucina, at least as an alternate skin for Marth.

Thanks very much there- it's quite a while when I checked out that page, I should update it a bit.

I wish to see Lyn too, she'd turn out to be an amazing fighter, no doubt. Her fighting style would look really cool if implemented from her game to Smash-style (and I'd personally love if they gave her some battoujutsu-style to her moves and attacks, since she kinda does it already in her animations).
I'm looking forward to Chrom myself (but Lucina wouldn't be bad either)

I've been actually doing this for a while now too, even if mostly I have bit difficult time trying to draw for real (because I've been mostly revising the basics and other techniques I remember).
Maybe it's because I feel unconfident of putting my learned things to use. But I'm trying my best.

I have to agree with you whole-heartedly on everything above- and even then I have a lot other series I love for their crossovers as much as SSB. though I might admit that I'm quite a junkee on 'em as I seem to prefer writing crossovers over single-franchise things.
And thanks- I'd be quite blissed to see one ever emerging from my effort!

Gotta admit, that's really good advice... I could say it's mix of impatience and perhaps just the fear that opportunities keep slipping away from me.  But you gave me a very useful link there and it taught me me a new depth on using references! Thanks! (I usually find time to draw during school breaks currently)

Hahahah, my sis again (:icondreamerry:) tends to complain that her original work doesn't really get her anywhere (though psst- she's now illustrating for a kid's storybook). But you're right. Strangely enough I don't seem entirely interested (or maybe just very sure) on making original works (and maybe worlds. It's been years since I did any OC.)

Keep going with the fanfics though! Have you ever tried to illustrate one? When I was younger I was really inspired by newspaper comic strips and was always drawing my own comic books haha.

Well technically I tended to write scripts for stories that would get illustrated to comics by my sis when we were young. I made my current long-time friend (7 years now) through this as well.
Though I could say it left me out from knowing the real effort when drawing actual things (lately as I've seen)

I wish I could illustrate my fanfics, but personally I wish to see other people do their takes on them. At times some style of art catches my eye (like yours) and it seems to fit a certain scenario of any fanfic I have written so well- I mean I could do it too if I worked hard enough but I'm afraid it doesn't come off in the way or as well as the current artists would do it. But who knows, if I'll keep on going enough, my mind might really change!

Ahh thank you, I'm glad the picture made you feel that way! Lyn and Florina have probably my favorite relationship in the entire game and I'm really happy I was able to convey it with this image. Ah yes, that interpretation would make it even sweeter that their bond is so strong; I didn't think of that (possibly because I never read the Hector/Florina support as being particularly romantic at all and found the paired ending to come somewhat out of nowhere). In that scenario, I feel like if one of them ended up with Hector, the other would bury their feelings and be happy for them both, and of course the friendship would remain; it's just that strong. I wish Florina didn't return to Ilia in their paired ending, but I assume she flew out to the plains a lot for visits.
