in the wake of all that arguing over what gender link should be, how about they make a zelda game where link's gender is never referenced/stated anywhere in canon and it can be whatever the player wants, i'm sure that would make everyone happy and definitely not lead to mass outrage and a thousand endless fandom debates.

Link is a man. If he were to be a woman, that would ruin the franchise for me. Link is a guy, a legend, a warrior of ancient times with the legendary sword and shield. Change that and it's no longer The Legend of Zelda.

Well, there are a lot of different incarnations of Link in the series, so the Links in the older games would still be the same guys. But I get that it can be jarring when they switch up tradition; the advancing technology in Hyrule is a bit weird to me personally since I think of the setting as being so old-fashioned.

The robot looked more like ancient technology very similar to the desert structures in Skyward Sword. I don't think this new Zelda will be futuristic, think it will be sporting the ancient magic thing.
Also, female Link.. meh. Zelda U wants to revolutionise on the same level as Ocarina. Some core things need to stay recognizable to still be able to identify as a Zelda. Obviously, the green tunic doesn't make the hero, but he does have a very distinct appearance. Turning him into a girl would be like making Samus Aran from metroid into a dude. They have their iconic looks, and that aspect of the game isn't really the most important part to want to change as opposed to good gameplay and story. shaking that bit up is unnecessary and will do more bad than good in terms of fan reception (and therefore sales, not really a good busines plan).

Love your artwork btw  On a fav spree. C:<

Actually, I think that WOULD lead to mass outrage and endless fandom debates! :XD:
Because a lot of people are made uncomfortable, one way or another, by any human- real or fake- where you can never tell what gender they are. But Zelda seems to be going that direction with different characters that have weird appearances that make you wonder things about them. :)
Like you answered below, an option would be better than ambiguity.
Another thing that would work though (theoretically, based on canon): Most people don't know this, but Link and Zelda are actually recurring characters, in history, NOT the same actual people in every game! The same Link and Zelda do appear in more than one game several times, but they're almost like the Avatar or something in that they're different people getting into the roles as time passes. So since Link usually isn't actually the same person in each game... they could just go and make a female Link!
The only problem with that is that most people don't realize that every time you play a Zelda game, it's usually a different person... and that would create a shock.

Yes, the description was meant to be ironic. :XD: But yes, exactly as you said, Link and Zelda are continually reincarnated throughout history so there's no reason they couldn't be born into different circumstances than they're usually seen in, especially after SS proved that Zelda doesn't even have to be born royalty. And the HW concept art for a female character based on Link seems to show that the creators have at least thought about it.

If "HW" stands for "Hyrule Warriors"...
LOL if they made Link female in Hyrule Warriors the only male left would be Darunia.:XD:

Well, Ganondorf, The Imprisoned, Zant, Ghirahim, Volga and Wizzro are all the bad guys, so then it would be all females as protagonists with Darunia with them VS all males as bad guys with Cia with them and people might make accusations that aggressive feminists had hijacked the story.:la:

LOL that animation. :spin:Good thing he doesn't need to be female to do that.
And now I think I need to learn about that glitch...! So thanks for informing me.

Honestly tho. It would be kinda cool if the new Link was a girl.
But here's an idea:
Being able to choose link's gender, and the story/dialogue could change depending on what gender you chose.

There was apparently unused concept art for a female character based on Link included in the Hyrule Warriors artbook, so it may not be that farfetched to think they might do that someday. (And the concept art looks very nice, though it's hard to make out the details of the outfit.)

Yeah, a gender option (with little impact on gameplay aside from switched pronouns) would probably be the most effective route for them to take if they choose to address the issue.

But for reals yeah, Nintendo really, and I mean REALLY needs to make gender an optional. I'd have THAT much more respect for Shigero Miyamoto if he made that happen.

What I'm kinda hoping for is the option to choose either Link or Zelda as the main character. Or perhaps a gender option for Link, where there will be no significant game-play differences depending on the gender. Somewhat like Skyrim. Gender really doesn't matter other than a couple of things people in the world will say.
And this is an extremely nice picture. Can't wait for this game.

Thank you, I'm glad you like the picture! I'm really excited for it too. I'd definitely get behind an option to choose between playing as Link or Zelda; it would be great to see the princess have a more active role in the series.

A gender option with no significant gameplay differences is admittedly probably the most sensible way to go if they decide to cater to players who care about this. With a character who's been established as male for so long, it would seem a bit like cheating to use the exact same character model and expect everyone to be satisfied with the new female character.

Haha yeah and it's not like this fandom has any problems with sexist attitudes, like that Zelda is useless (but Sheik is cool) or that she owes Link anything for saving her. And there totally aren't any people who complain about Link looking too feminine every single time a new design is released despite him looking young and androgynous pretty much ever since the second game. :P

I don't know why everyone is freaking out about gender these days. Especially Link's gender. He's always been a guy- he probably will ALWAYS be a guy. WHO THE HELL CARES? Nintendo is a lot of things, but a creator of bad/poorly executed female characters they are not. Zelda might always be getting captured by the villain, but she helps Link beat Ganondorf in pretty much every recent Zelda game (that I know of) and she is still the active, SOLITARY LEADER of Hyrule. She gets captured because Ganondorf is pretty much an invading commander trying to take over Hyrule, so to take over another country you have to... OH THAT'S RIGHT- take the ruling power out of the way. Who's the ruling power? ZELDA. Thus the capturing of Zelda in every game- not because she's a woman and "has to be saved" by the hero, but because she's the freaking RULER and Ganondorf has to take her out to conquer Hyrule.

If it comes down to wanting to play as a female character- really? It's a freaking GAME. If you don't like it, don't play. It makes sense for games like Pokemon or Fire Emblem to have the choice between male and female playable characters because you're playing as yourself. A game like LoZ- AS OF YET- is not that kind of game. You play as the designated hero along a linear playing path to beat the bad guy and win. Without arguing whether or not this is a good game style, the fact remains that this is the game style LoZ has followed up until this point. Even broadening the world and removing area boundaries does not change that. It's still a linear game with linear features EVEN IF you can choose your objectives in a different order.

Do I want more female protagonist representation in gaming- yeah, it'd be really nice for people not to look down on female characters or try to say they can only be one way to be good. But I personally do not think that getting pissed over Link still being a guy will help. There's no reason why he COULDN'T be a girl, but if Nintendo doesn't want to go that route yet, I don't think it's okay to get pissed over it. Nintendo does do a lot of weird and different things in the gaming world, but if they don't want to change this franchise (that is highly successful, I will point out) who are we to tell them they have to?

Maybe one day- after women have better representation in the gaming world- we MIGHT see a female Link or a female protagonist for the LoZ franchise. But maybe we won't and we have to accept that eventually.

At least that's what I think.

I agree that getting upset usually doesn't help anything, but people make suggestions about new directions for the series all the time; it's their right and part of the fun of being a fan to do that. Do we think so little of Nintendo that we expect them to wait around for the rest of the gaming industry to get a handle on female representation before doing anything? They can just as easily make a difference. (Please note, though, that my original suggestion was not for a definitively female Link. It was meant to accommodate players who still wanted to play as male Link... and players who might want neither.)

The degree to which Link is his own character has always been a bit blurry. It's been stated that he's supposed to be a "link to the player", a blank slate character for players to identify with and project onto, and in that sense he's not much different from the avatars in Pokemon or Fire Emblem Awakening. (In fact, the avatar in FE13 gets far more characterization than Link ever does.) He's also a different person in nearly every game, due to the reincarnation of the hero's spirit. These things considered, I think it makes considerably more sense for them to do something like this with Link than with most other established game protagonists.

I do like Zelda as a character and think she gets unfairly blamed for being kidnapped... however, I question the writers for repeatedly using the "kidnapped princess" cliche to give her so little screentime in a game that's named after her. I appreciate that they've been trying to give her a more active role in recent titles like ST and SS, but I would enjoy it even more if we actually saw her ruling or taking an authoritative rather than vulnerable role at some point. The series is only just barely hanging onto the kidnapping trope by this point, usually having her get captured around the end of the game or putting a spin on it (Spirit Tracks), so I'd be quite happy if they left it behind altogether.
