MAGI - Labyrinth of Magic by aquanut MAGI - Labyrinth of Magic by aquanut
:bulletblue: tumblr :bulletblue:

Because I kept seeing fanart of it everywhere, I started reading Magi, not really expecting anything… and found myself surprisingly involved with it by the third volume... The first volume is full of childish gags, but the character development gets downright interesting afterwards. I'm up to volume 5.

It may take me a while to catch up because I read pretty sporadically, but I'm looking forward to what happens.

Wow, I love how sharp the characters are compared to the background, it really gives the effect as if they're shooting along (OMG bad English >w>)and the little boy at the front -I'm ashamed to say I don't"t know any of these characters ;w; - is just so huggable

Thank you for mentioning that, I'm glad you find it gives that effect; I had been hoping that popping them out of the background a bit would add a slight sense of motion, so what you said makes me happy! And yes, the little boy's character design is very cute, I'm glad you like how he's drawn =) No need to be ashamed haha, I don't expect people to recognize every random series I happen to pick up. Thank you for commenting, I really appreciate that you took the time to say something even though you're not familiar with the series (and, your English is fine)! =)

Yeah the first volume threw me off a bit, but when I kept reading I really loved Balbadd's arc and its discussion of politics a whole bunch, it can get surprisingly complex!! Later arcs really tie back to previous arcs too, so everything's all intertwined. I'm glad to hear you're enjoying it so far!

Ah, I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed it as well! Yeah, I've only just gotten into the Balbadd arc and the politics that have been dealt with so far have been really interesting, and I'm really glad to hear that later arcs tie back into earlier ones--I'm a sucker for a tightly woven story. I'll be looking forward to how it unfolds!

I don't really have a favorite character yet; I find I like all three of the ones I drew here... At first Morgiana was my favorite, but after they went into some of Alibaba's backstory I liked him as well, and Aladdin's general desire to help people and avoid conflict is hard to dislike.

I always love it when someone I look up to has a same interest in something I enjoy. Especially Magi,  it's a really good series and the anime's pretty nice in my opinion.

Cool, I'm glad I could draw something you like! It's always fun for me as well when I draw fanart of some random thing I've never drawn before and I find out some of my watchers actually know what it is, haha.

I'm probably not going to see the show since I usually don't watch the anime of a series if I read the manga first... and I also find it jarring that they made nearly every character white. At least the manga is black-and-white so I picture them otherwise haha.

Haha, I get what you mean about the skin coloring. (I've noticed earlier how practically all anime characters are usually white, and I don't exactly find that enjoyable but nevertheless still a good anime) I usually imagine what the characters are like in the manga a bit too much. I'm often surprised by what the hair colors actually are for the characters when in the anime.

Yeah, I grew up reading Ranma 1/2 as a manga and I always imagined Ranma's hair as black in both forms, so it was always kinda weird how in the anime Ranma's hair was red half the time :P (The characters are probably meant to be Asian, not white, in a lot of cases... but the often homogenous look of anime characters can still be frustrating both for diversity's sake and character recognition purposes. I really don't mind when characters are stylized in ways that look similar to each other--I find "generic cute" appealing--but having a cast of white characters in a story seemingly set in the Middle East is really just kind of nonsensical, even knowing the story exists in its own universe and isn't trying to accurately represent Arabian culture.)

I feel the same as well. Usually, when a new anime comes out for a manga I've read for a while ends up having the characters 'white-washed' or etc., I'm actually pretty disappointed but not so much since the styles are still 'generically appealing'. Basically for me, the character's appearance contrasting the universe's culture and theme is pretty bizarre, and (agreeing to what you've added in) nonsensical.

I'm not exactly a large fan of anime's that can't accurately represent their assumed cultures, but nonetheless I still watch them anyways.

(I get what you mean about Ranma's hair, not exactly sure why the animators decided that :P )

I like the visuals for the background quite a lot in this one, they remind me a bit of Skyward Sword's art style. I wager it's a bit easier to handle these outfits than the finely detailed Fire Emblem ones, but of course they still look very good in their relative simplicity. The differing reactions of the characters are nice, it makes you wonder what sort of adventure they're confronting next and how they'll approach it.

Thank you! It's funny you mentioned Skyward Sword because I was actually thinking of its desert areas while I drew this--apparently the influence shows. And yes, I was very relieved to be able to draw these outfits, haha; I much prefer simpler outfits and will never understand why JRPG heroes have to wear so many belts. :P Thank you as always for your comment, I'm glad their expressions give you an idea of their personality!

Happy to oblige :) And yeah, the belt issue is kind of odd. Take Lulu's outfit in Final Fantasy X; the lower part of her outfit beneath the coat is pretty much all belts. The designers wanted to see if the game developers could animate it well. They couldn't, which is why she's never shown below the waist in animated cutscenes.

Ahaha fanart is a powerful influence :P Yeah, it is, I was pleasantly surprised... because it's fairly rare for me to actually like popular things that I get into due to fanart :P
